Digital Marketing Internship Career Development

From Studying to Working: The Story of My Internship

Have you ever wondered if college projects really matter in the “real world”? For me, the answer came in the form of a digital simulation and an email that changed the course of my career.

1. The Opportunity That Arose in the Classroom

It all started on a typical day at college, during my Digital Marketing & Analytics class. At the time, I was already thinking about my next steps and looking for opportunities, like many students are. But once the class began, I made a conscious effort to set those thoughts aside and focus on what was in front of me. Looking back, that small decision—to be fully present and to do the work properly, even when it seemed like just another class—made all the difference.

In that very first session, our professor (Andra Diaconescu) introduced us to a platform called Simbound. She explained that we would use this simulation to put theory into practice, turning digital marketing concepts into real strategic decisions.

At first, it started as academic curiosity. But as we moved into the seminars and split into teams, competing for the best results in the virtual marketplace, I began to engage with it more seriously. As I explored the interface and saw how my decisions influenced the outcomes, I realized that Simbound wasn’t just a learning tool—it was a window into how the industry really works.

2. The Competition: Where Things Got Real

The competition Winter 25

Toward the end of the semester, the challenge emerged: The Simbound Digital Marketing Competition - Winter 25 Edition. At first, my expectations were modest. Like many others, I was aiming for a decent result, maybe a top 5 finish and a certificate. But once the competition started, everything changed.

Unlike the teamwork during the semester, in the competition I was on my own. The pace suddenly became much faster. Rounds followed one another every two days, motivating me to analyze the data quickly and adjust the campaigns in a timely manner. I revisited the FAQ section countless times, trying to understand every detail. That period was an intense “crash course” in digital strategy. The last changes or additions were on January 10, 2026—the “final call.”

3. The “Aha!” Moment: The Results and the Surprise Offer

On January 14, I received the email I will never forget. My name was in 3rd place, receiving a Special Mention. I was amazed and extremely proud that my work had been recognized at such a high level. But the big surprise was yet to come.

Shortly after the official announcement, I was contacted for an online meeting to discuss a potential internship. It wasn’t the typical recruitment process, with CVs sent into the void and weeks of waiting. My performance in the simulation had already demonstrated what I could do.

In a way, the competition itself had become the most relevant interview I could have asked for.

4. Projects: "Global Voices" and Beyond

I officially started my job on the first working day of February 2026. One of my first major projects was testing and implementing the company’s new translation software. I named it “Global Voices,” a title that reflects Simbound’s ambition to be accessible anywhere in the world, as well as our intention to amplify voices that are often overlooked or unheard. Through my contribution to this program, the simulation begins to “speak your language.”

My role extended far beyond linguistics. While translating content from English to Romanian, I was primarily testing the workflow of a software innovation. I was surprised to learn that a website can be built in just two weeks, a discovery that opened my eyes to the efficiency of modern development. Later, I wrote and published an article directly through a Headless CMS—my first experience working “behind the scenes” of a professional platform.

As the internship progressed, I continued to take on various tasks that had a positive impact on the team’s operations. I contributed to the launch of our new website interface by transferring information from the old website to the new one. To support the “Global Voices” initiative, I created a comprehensive user guide for new participants and designed an official brochure. In addition, I conducted several rounds of testing for the simulation web application to ensure optimal performance.

These responsibilities, spread out over the course of my 60-day journey, made me feel deeply involved in the company’s mission.

Seeing my work published—and later seeing my name and photo on the team’s official page—gave me a real sense of belonging and a clear perspective on how my contributions met the team’s evolving needs.

5. Team Culture and Remote Work: A Lesson in Unity and Quality

Although I worked fully remotely, communication was flawless. I discovered a small but extremely close-knit team, where professionalism is evident in the promptness of responses and mutual support.

One of the most important moments was meeting the team in Cluj at the end of February. It confirmed something I had already felt behind the screens, there are people who truly value quality. There were times when I feared I wouldn’t deliver fast enough. I learned that it’s more important to deliver something well-done, even if it takes more time than something quick and superficial. This culture of quality and understanding helped me overcome moments of uncertainty.

6. Lessons Learned and a New Beginning

Looking back on these 60 days, the lessons go beyond the realm of digital marketing. I learned:

  • The importance of initiative: If I hadn’t entered the competition out of a desire to learn more, this entire experience—including the internship and everything that followed—wouldn’t have happened.
  • Technical adaptability: Learning to use new tools and systems is not optional, it’s essential.
  • The value of the team: A good mentor, like the one I had, who guided without seeking credit—and responsive colleagues can accelerate learning more than any theoretical course.

I am extremely grateful for this experience and for the patience with which I was guided.

Final Thought

If there’s one essential lesson from this journey, it’s this: doing things the right way—carefully, with integrity and attention to quality—always pays off in the long run. Results may not come instantly, but when they do, they are meaningful and lasting.

This experience showed me that when you commit to doing things well, you don’t just meet expectations, create opportunities, build trust, and open doors you didn’t even know existed.

And the best news? My collaboration with Simbound continues! I’m officially transitioning from intern to full-time employee, ready to take the projects we’ve started to the next level.

If you’re a student reading this, my advice is simple: treat every simulation or course project as a real opportunity. Do the work properly, even when no one seems to be watching. Because sometimes, the difference between a simple assignment and a life-changing opportunity is exactly that extra effort.
