Teaching Digital Marketing with Simbound A Teacher's Perspective
Discover how Marcelle de la Roche helps students learn through practical decisions, independent thinking and simulation-based learning.
“Students are now thinking about digital marketing channels and concepts in a more realistic way, rather than as theory they only need to learn for an exam.”

How are you currently using Simbound in your teaching?
Please share your institution, study programme, course duration (in weeks), and how the simulation fits into your curriculum.
I currently use Simbound in an introductory Digital Marketing course taught to second-year university students at the Australian University in Kuwait. The course runs during the Spring and Fall semesters over 16 weeks, with the simulation running for 8 of those weeks. The simulation is built into the curriculum, and students are assessed on their ability to build a website and to carry out search engine marketing (SEM), social media and email marketing activities using the software. In addition to building these skills, students present their thought processes and reasoning, and interpret the analytics provided by the simulation.

What is your favourite Simbound feature, and why?
Is it the AI-powered tools, competitive learning environment, realistic marketing decisions, or the variety of digital marketing topics covered?
My favourite part of the simulation is the new AI voice assistant. I believe it gives students valuable feedback and a clear understanding of where they need to improve, without being overly prescriptive. Students still have the freedom to be creative and make their own decisions, but the assistant guides them well and creates genuine learning moments. The simulation is also realistic and covers all the digital marketing concepts I require for this introductory course.

What has changed in your classroom since introducing Simbound?
Have you noticed differences in student engagement, feedback, learning outcomes, or academic performance?
Students are definitely more engaged, and the simulation has created friendly competition to see who makes the most profit and gets the most visitors, likes and comments. They are also thinking about digital marketing channels and concepts in a more realistic way, rather than as theory they only need to learn for an exam. As I only piloted the software in the summer semester, it is too soon to tell whether academic performance has improved, but watch this space…

What advice would you give educators introducing marketing simulations into their teaching for the first time?
Are there any practical tips or lessons learned you would share?
I would suggest that educators take the time to play with the simulation themselves to gain a thorough understanding of the back-end simulation decisions and what drives them. This way, they can guide students when their results are not optimal and incorporate those lessons into their teaching.

What’s the next big development you’d like to explore through marketing simulations?
Whether it’s emerging digital marketing channels, new audiences, AI, data privacy, or something entirely different, what excites you most about the future of marketing education?
Through influencer marketing, I’d like to explore AI-generated content, how it is disclosed, and its subsequent impact on consumer engagement.
Additional insights
A few more quick questions to get to know their experience.
-
How do you structure the simulation experience?
Students work individually. Each week, a new concept is introduced in theory, followed by a tutorial lesson in which students put the theory into practice.
-
How do you assess student performance?
Performance is assessed through the implementation of theory, the decisions students make based on their results, and their explanation of the analytics.
-
What surprised you most after introducing Simbound?
What surprised me most was the competitive nature the simulation brought out in students.
-
How do you encourage students to learn from their results, whether poor or solid?
We normally hold a peer review discussion.
-
How much guidance do you provide during the simulation?
Students are actively coached throughout the course.
